I'd like to share a touching story about our ancestors, particularly our maternal Great, Great, Great Grandmother Antonia Galea Mercieca.
Antonia married our Great, Great, Great Grandfather Angelo Mercieca on October 20, 1819, in the city of Nadur on the island of Gozo, Malta. Angelo, a skilled fisherman, raised their family in this coastal town.
Angelo passed his fishing expertise to his children as the family expanded. Each morning, they joined him at sea for the day's catch. Among their children were Francesco, Salvatore, Vincenzo, Antonia, Domenico, Giovanni, Emmanuele, and the youngest, Gregorio.
A fierce storm brewed one winter, and Antonia felt uneasy about her family venturing out to sea. However, Angelo was determined to provide for his loved ones. Antonia made a courageous decision to stay ashore with young Gregorio, our Great-great-grandfather.
Tragically, Angelo and their seven children never returned. It was a heartbreaking loss for Antonia and young Gregorio, but her keeping him ashore proved our family's saving grace.
Let us always remember the name Antonia Galea Mercieca. She is our family's guardian angel, whose selfless act ensured the continuation of our lineage. Her bravery and love have given us life and a legacy to cherish for generations.
